Korfball Australia’s annual National Club Championships were held on June 11/12 in Drysdale Victoria, the home town of IKF Regional Vice President for Oceania Mrs Helen Searle.
Played over two days the tournament provided some exciting korfball showcased by many of Australia’s best young korfballers. Perennial finalists Adelaide Boomers were once again one of the dominant teams of the weekend and qualified for another final. They were joined by the Glenelg Korfball Club who qualified for their first A Grade final since the club was established, originally as Scaldis, 20 years ago.
In what was easily the most exciting game of the weekend both teams got mini breaks but in each instance the other fought back strongly resulting in scores being tied with less than 1 minute to go. In a frantic final 30 seconds Glenelg drew a penalty which was calmly converted resulting in them claiming their first National Club Championships title, a result which saw 20 years of built up emotion released after a game that was played in terrific spirit by both teams. Final score 15-14.
Final Standings:
1 Glenelg
2 Adelaide Boomers
3 North Adelaide
4 Bacchus Marsh/Melton
Adelaide Boomers were able to gain some consolation by taking out the B Grade tournament. In another close final they defeated North Adelaide 11-8.
Final Standings:
1 Adelaide Boomers
2 North Adelaide
3 Glenelg
4 Drysdale
5 Bacchus Marsh/Melton
In what was a first for Korfball Australia both the A Grade and B Grade final were refereed by female referees and there were more female than male referees for the tournament.
